Minimum TWO students per workshop; Maximum THREE students per workshop.

Keep your student moving forward this summer!!!!

Did you know....**

  • 1) most students (regardless of family income or background) lose on  average one    to two  months of the skills learned during the school year over the summer?
  • 2) a summer learning loss of three months in the elementary grades becomes a gap of eighteen months by the end of sixth grade?
  • 3) by middle school, this is a loss of two or more years in reading achievement?

Don't let this be your student!  Learning Essentials' Summer Workshops will provide students with exciting learning experiences to increase achievement in reading, writing, study skills and research skills.  Our explicit, systematic instruction is specifically designed to prevent loss of skills, build new skills and develop confident learners.  Participation in our summer workshops will offer opportunities to practice needed skills, enrich learning, provide specific strategies (that apply to all levels of learning), and prepare students for next school year.

Writing Workshop
: Our writing workshop provides concrete steps for students, beginning with the basics of writing a complete sentence through the more advanced processes involved in writing essays.  The processes that are necessary for learning are broken down into manageable steps enabling students to successfully meet standards.  This program is designed to help students avoid specific writing problems by teaching them the skills necessary to understand and recognize the problem. Our writing workshop does not attempt to teach every grammar rule, but instead focuses on the rules that are crucial to developing good sentence and paragraph structure.

The first two course in the series focuses on sentence structure:
  • Course One: Students are taught the  “PENS” strategy to learn how to write effective simple and compound sentences. (recommended for grades 1-2)
  • Course Two:  Students are taught the “PENS” strategy to write effective complex and compound-complex sentences. (recommended for grades 2-3)
The second two courses in our writing series focuses on paragraph development:
  • Course Three: Students learn about organizing, sequencing and expressing ideas in paragraph form. (recommended for grades 3-5)
  • Course Four: Students learn a strategic approach to theme writing and writing for essay questions. (recommended for grades 6-12)

Reading Workshop
: Students in this workshop learn important visualization techniques needed to generate an in-depth understanding of text and, in turn, elaborate on writing.  Active reading strategies (such as: note-taking, highlighting, and margin notes) will be practiced to improve reading comprehension. (recommended for grades 6-8)

Study Skills Workshop: Is your child unsure of how or when to begin studying for big test?  Are they having difficulty with taking effective notes?  Do they have trouble recalling the appropriate information for the test?  If you answered YES to any of these questions, then your student could benefit from the Learning Essentials Study Skill Workshop! (recommended for grades 8-12)

Our enhanced Study Skills workshop focuses on:
  • Test Preparation Skills: Learn the five-day test prep strategies for successfully taking test…including how to reduce test anxiety.
  • Test Taking Strategies: Students learn the various types of test taking strategies and they practice taking test with various formats.
  • Breaking down long term assignments: Students learn how to break down long term assignments into manageable parts.
  • Managing study Time and Routines: Students learn how to prepare a Term Calendar including development of sound study habits and preparing daily organizers that benefit them in and out of school.
  • Taking Notes: Students learn effective lecture and textbook note taking strategies.

Research Skills Workshop
: Students in this workshop learn how to create a 3-D Research Report Organizer. This is an amazing tool that helps students organize research notes and write a quality paper. Students will also be introduced to confidence building strategies on how to improve presentation skills. (recommended for upper elementary and middle school students)
